Carl Backman
Math
Mr. Backman became a resident of Florida in July 2022, after being hired to teach Math at LBHS. For the past 36 years, Mr. Backman has lived in Vermont. He came to Vermont in 1985 to attend the University of Vermont to study Business - as was all the rage in the late 1980s. After a few years of bouncing around various finance jobs, he went back to school to become a mathematics teacher. He has been a licensed Mathematics teacher since 1994.
Mr. Backman met his wife (also a teacher) at school in 2003 and they have been married since 2005. In 2006 they bought a few acres in the mountains in Waterbury, Vermont and have lived there since. Mrs. Backman is not currently in Florida as she was recently promoted to be the Executive Director of Learning for the South Burlington School District, and the Backman family decided that it would be best for Mrs. Backman and their daughter Memphis to stay in Vermont for this year to explore that opportunity. Mr. Backman and his son August will be living in Englewood for the year.
Throughout his career, Mr. Backman has taught everything from Consumer Math to Advanced Placement Statistics. He has also coached the Boys Varsity Golf Team for 25 years. He also started and coached Varsity Snowboarding for 15 years and was the chair of the Vermont High School Snowboard Series for 10 years.
When not at school, Mr. Backman loves to make sushi, play with his kids, go hiking with his wife and their dogs, and work on his antique car projects.
